Opinion poll: Is it important to have a website that is mobile phone friendly?

Australia has one of the highest smartphone penetration rates in the world. We use our phones for everything: to connect with friends, to find information and, of course, to shop online. It’s no surprise then that mobile-friendly websites are top-of-mind for most Aussie small business owners.

In our recent Hello! Yellow poll, over 91% of you told us that a mobile-friendly site is a must-have for your business in 2020, compared to just 9% who don’t view it as important.

As COVID-19 lockdowns and remote work become more common across the country, there’s no doubt that mobile phone usage is only set to increase in the future.

So how do you know if your website design is mobile-friendly, and what can you do to improve your customer’s experience on the small screen?

How to create a mobile-friendly website design in 2020.

  • Use the free Google mobile-friendly test. This free tool will analyse your website and tell you how you stack up — and what you can do to improve.
  • Make your website responsive. Responsive website design adapts your content to the device that a person is using. Most website builders like WordPress or Squarespace now have mobile-friendly templates. If your website isn’t responsive, it might be time to look at redesigning one that fits the small screen.
  • Compress your images. Site speed plays a big role in mobile-friendly website design. Compress all the images on your website to the smallest size possible without compromising quality to improve the load time on your page.
  • Make the fonts and buttons larger. The screen on a smartphone is far smaller than a desktop or tablet, which means you need to make your font size a couple of points larger to ensure it’s readable on a mobile device. The same goes for buttons — make sure they’re big enough for a user to press on their phone.
